Rishi K. Wadhera, M.D., M.P.P., M.Phil. is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, cardiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and the Associate Director of the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research at BIDMC. He is also an Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Wadhera received his M.D. from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine as well as an M.Phil. in Public Health as a Gates Cambridge Scholar from the University of Cambridge. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. During this time, he also received a Master’s in Public Policy (M.P.P.) at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, with a focus on health policy.

Dr. Wadhera’s research combines the use of advanced statistical, econometric, and epidemiological methods with large national datasets to answer questions focused to healthcare access, quality of care, and population health. His empirical work has leveraged causal inference methods to understand how state and federal health policies – particularly those enacted under the Affordable Care Act – impact care delivery, health outcomes, and equity. Dr. Wadhera has authored >160 peer-reviewed publications to date, many of which have appeared in leading medical journals (New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, JACC). He is the PI of several NIH and extramural grants, including an R01 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Dr. Wadhera has also mentored numerous medical students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty across the Harvard system and nationally, and is a recipient of the Harvard Medical School Excellence in Mentoring Award. He serves as Senior Associate Editor for Health Services Research Journal and has been an expert writing group member for American Heart Association (AHA) Policy Statements focused on value-based care.
