During Dr. Winston’s career in cardiology and electrophysiology, he was co-director of the electrophysiology laboratory, chief of cardiology and the medical director of the Michigan Heart and Vascular Institute at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI. He founded quality committees within his practice and within the institute, with an emphasis on peer-review and the patient experience.

As President of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Cardiology ACC), he enlisted all of the Michigan hospitals in the “Door-to-Balloon” initiative, resulting in substantive state-wide improvements in the care of acute myocardial infarction. As a Trustee of the (national) ACC, he was actively engaged in the scrutiny of the development of guidelines and chaired the College’s Governance Committee. He continues to the present as a member of the ACC’s Clinical Policy Approval Committee.

He received his B.S. in psychology and his medical degree from Michigan State University. His medicine residency and general cardiology fellowship was at Detroit Osteopathic and Riverside Hospitals. His fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology was at the University of California, San Francisco.

He is currently Vice-Chair of the Patient Experience Committee of Integrated Health Associates, a 600+ provider multispecialty group in Ann Arbor, MI and the physician lead for its provider coaching program. As part of these activities, he is the lead faculty member for regularly held seminars on provider-patient communication.

He is also currently a co-investigator of a research project with the aim to examine the uptake and effects of primary care clinician commitments to following Choosing Wisely® recommendations.
